Downtown Guelph

Recycled Street Banners

PRESS RELEASE

DECEMBER 8 2009
GUELPH ON

Launch of new artist project: recycled Downtown Guelph street banners, turned into reusable bags by artist Candace Sepulis. Bags will be sold at "Go With the Flo - the alternative craft show" from 11am - 4pm, Sunday December 13th 2009 at FLO Creative Space, 260 Waterloo Ave. in Guelph. (and subsequently made available for sale online)

In 2008, local artist/designer Candace Sepulis illustrated 3 street banners for Downtown Guelph. The banners were on display during the summer months of 2008 and 2009. Upon hearing that the banners were going to be taken down and discarded (2 years is the average for street banners as with pollution and exposure to the elements, they begin to wear and fall off the posts), Sepulis devised a way to upcycle the material and turn the old banners into products such as bags and report covers. Not only does help reduce, reuse and recycle the discarded materials, but the project also aims to further build community by offering an accessible piece of art, and a part of Downtown Guelph, to buyers.

Candace Sepulis is a local illustrator, graphic designer and commercial artist. Her graphic design and illustration work can be found in countless projects - from magazines to album covers. With her unique style and dexterity in abstract thought, she generates refreshing, original works that stand out and generate conversation. Also very involved in the community and environmental initiatives, her design studio, Ballyhoo Media, has worked with many like-minded organizations including the Downtown Guelph Business Association, BioEnterprise and The Nature Conservancy of Canada. Committed to her community, she is currently a Board Member with the Hillside Festival and have been involved with many other local organizations such as Ed Video and CFRU radio.
